Fall back.....

October was another busy month which rolled us right into November in a blink of an eye.

We started October by taking a field trip with our homeschool group to a Dude Ranch in the outskirts of Jacksonville. The boys rode horses, went on a hay ride, fed goats, walked on a nature trail, and just enjoyed being outdoors.

Baseball continued, with either games or practice for at least one of the boys. Throw in the mix a practice/scrimmage for Chandler's advanced team, and it feels like we lived at the baseball fields.

Chris's birthday was in October, I won't tell you how old he is. His birthday fell on a Sunday, so we took him to Sneakers, a HUGE sports bar, to eat wings, drink beer, and watch football. He really enjoyed that.

Cooper had two big milestones in October. He lost his first tooth. It happened very suddenly and without any advance stress :). We were sitting down at dinner and he said he thought his tooth was loose. After asking him if it hurt, and he said "No", I didn't give it another thought. About five minutes later, he was sitting in the living room, finishing his kiwi, and he said "Oh, I guess my tooth just came out!". So a little blood, and wal-lah, there it was. He was pretty excited, and sure to put it under his pillow that night. Lucky boy, that generous Tooth Fairy brought him $6.27 the next morning.

As luck would have it, he lost his second tooth the next week, but this one wasn't so easy. Last year we found out from the Dentist that Cooper had a random "extra tooth" up in his gums, right above the two front teeth. The Dentist thought that this tooth, because it was laying on it's side, would prevent the adult teeth from pushing down and coming in. We took him to a Oral Surgeon, who confirmed the Dentist's predictions. So this month, we scheduled Cooper to have in-patient surgery to remove that extra tooth. I was very nervous, especially because I wasn't able to go back in the room with him. He was put under anesteshia, with an IV drip and all. I bribed him to cooperate with the Dr, promising that I would take him to Target afterwards and buy him the Indiana Jones whip (which was supposed to be part of his original Halloween costume anyway). The Dr. said Cooper did awesome, cooperated 110%. He was a little "out of it" after the surgery, and the Dr. said he might not feel well for a day or two. Cooper was up and at it by 2p that day, and eager to go outside and play with friends. By the next day, it wasn't even a thought in his mind.

Cooper's second milestone for the month was that he got a GAME BALL. This was something he had been looking forward to since the first game this season. If his team wins, the coach gives out a offense and defense game ball. Cooper was worried that he wouldnt' get one. He finally got one for a game when he played catcher most of the game, and did a great job getting the ball back to the coach. He was estatic and extremely proud of that game ball!

Halloween finally arrived. The boys all went as pirates. Even Max was finally into this year, and was quite excited once he finally figured out what this was all about: Candy! Although the other boys got quite a bag full of candy, Max never quited filled his up as he insisted on eating it as soon as he walked away from each door. I know, you are supposed to take it home and inspect it, but we were in a upscale neighborhood, so I figured it would be fine. We thought we would go ahead and let him eat his fill instead of fighting with him over it, and soon enough he would be done with it.

November arrived, bringing with it nice cool air. We were finally able to turn off the A/C and open up the windows. That brought in a nice refreshing breeze.

We took another field trip with our homeschool group on the Freedom Schnooner, a replica of a 17th-century schnooner. It was very cool. The children got to help raise and lower the sails. We sailed around the intercoastal waterway in St. Augustine. We saw SO many dolphins, it was unbelievable. Dolphins are such beautiful creatures, you never tired of seeing them jump and play in the water.

Chandler participated in his first Chess tournament. Chandler has been taking a Chess class in our homeschool co-op, which meets every Friday morning. He really enjoys it and is something he looks forward to every week, although his initial reaction when I asked him if he would like to do Chess was "Chess is for nerds.". I thought he would enjoy it with the way his logical mind works. He had the chance to participate in a local chess tournament, and it worked out that it was on a Saturday that he did not have a baseball game. His age group was for 3rd-5th grades, and there were about 50 participants in his level. Each participant would play 4 games, and at the end, they have some system that calculates points based on wins vs losses, and also points based on what pieces you took from opponents. Not sure really, as it is all a foreign language to Chris and I, but Chandler seemed to know what they were talking about. Chess is a very different environment than anything we have ever done. The children go into roped-off area, although we can see them. It is all hush-hush, and you are just trying to figure out how your child is doing by reading their facial expressions. There is no cheering or coaching from the sidelines. Chandler won 3 out of 4 games. We were just hoping that he would win at least one, and very proud of how he played considered he just started Chess in September. He did not place in the top three for his age bracket, but was 4th overall! Chandler would like to play in more chess tournaments, so we are keeping our eyes open for chess tournaments in the area.

Just to mention Max, he is chugging along, a rough and tumble boy who can definately hold his own in the arena with his brothers. He is growing up too fast :(.

At that brings us to early November, and we are heading into the Holiday season way too soon!

Check back for pictures from October!
