What happened to October????

Eeks, I am failing on this blog thing! It is constantly on my to-do list but just never seems to make it close enough to the top to actually get completed!

October was a another busy month for us.
Soccer practice and games for Cooper. Baseball practice and games for Chandler.

We went on a field trip to Dudley Farms, an old historical farm near Gainesville (about 2 hours from). The boys enjoyed the day outside. We picked alot of pecans from their trees, and were able to bring a bag home. So those are drying in a bowl in our kitchen and should be ready for use right around Thanksgiving. We should have enough for a pecan pie and some pecan sandies. Chandler was excited to drive by the football stadium for the University of Florida Gators in Gainesville. It is Gator rage here in Jacksonville, so my boys are kind of growing up in that and seem to be catching the fever. It is a bitter pill for someone who grew up with the Huskers to swallow, but since college sports are barely a blip on my radar these days, I will crush up the pill and swallow it with a teaspoon of sugar :).

Chris's birthday was on the 19th. We took him bowling as the boys seem to enjoy that and we don't go often enough. Cooper is finally old enough to participate and he enjoys doing activities that Chandler is doing also. Chandler is a decent bowler, so it usually starts out as a head-to-head competition between him and Chris. But once Chandler starts to have a few gutter balls, his pouting comes out and then his game is usually gone. Max doesn't care what is going on as long as he gets some snacks out of it. It was a rainy day, so our plans to go to the batting cage were cancelled. We ate dinner at a fish restuarant that is right on the river, and we sat outside on the deck that is really on the river as the rain had stopped by then. They had food dispensers where you could buy turtle food and throw out, so the boys enjoyed doing that, and there were several large turtles all around us. Then a alligator came over, probably about 4 feet long, thin, and was just hanging out about 2 feet from us. I really think he was after Cooper, he kept eyeballing him and turning to watch Cooper. It was creepy!!!

Fishing was the topic for Chandler's American Boys club, and he needed/wanted to go fishing to earn his badge. We went to the St. Augustine lighthouse Homeschool days, as the topic was fishing. Chandler and his buddy Nick learned alot about fishing, painted a fish which is a Japanese form of art, and climbed to the top of the lighthouse. Chandler, Chris and Grandpa went fishing on the St. Johns river. They didn't catch anything but saw some manatees up close.

Grandma took Cooper and Chandler to the Jacksonville Zoospactacular....a halloween-themed fun fest at the zoo. I had ordered the boy's costumes on-line and they hadn't arrived yet, but they wanted to wear costumes to this party, so I decided to wing it. Cooper actually has several super-hero costumes that he wears on a daily basis he could have worn, but they both wanted to be ghosts, so we did the homemade route. It actually turned out kind of cute. I used an white pillowcase for Cooper and a white sheet for Chandler...cut head and arm holes. Then I used two curtain sheers over that to give it a flowy look. Painted their faces white and then put flour in their hair. They loved it. Grandma said the costumes lasted about half way through the night (longer than I was expecting) but they had to take them off so they would not be slowed down going down the huge inflatable slide.

A friend offered me four tickets to the Jacksonville Symphony, and I thought it was great way to get some culture into my family. It was for a children's show, Halloween inspired, so I thought it would be a perfect intro for my family. The boys were able to wear their costumes, so they were excited about that. Prior to the show they have a Musical Zoo, with all of the instruments out and the children could touch them and try them out (they wiped them down in between children). The boys enjoyed that part, and then it was time to go into the show. The first song the Symphony played was the theme song to Star Wars, so both Chandler and Cooper immediately recognized it and were excited. That quickly dimmed and by the third song, it wasn't going so well. Max was trying to jump over the balcony, and didn't care if he had to step on the people in front of us to do it. Chris took him out to the lobby to walk around. I looked at Chandler, and his chin was stuck into his chest, arms crossed, eyelids sluggish. He said to me "Wake me when this is over." Cooper tugs on my arm sleeve and says "Where's the popcorn?". Hmm, maybe not for us, huh?

Max went to his 18-month check-up and everything is well. His head circumference is in the 90% percentile (par for the course with these boys, thanks to Daddy). His height is in the 75th, and weight in the 50%. So he actually is not that big of a boy, as far as weight. I think the cloth diapers are deceiving, because to look at him in clothes, he does look like a thick husky guy, but actually he is quite thin, although I can see he will be broad in the shoulders. Max is a tough cookie. He is not aggressive, but he will stand up for himself. It is not usual to look over and see him and Cooper wrestling, someone has pinned someone else and more times than not, Cooper is calling to be rescued from Max.

He had developed this weird red dot/bump on his cheek. We were playing the wait-and-see game. Chris thought it was blood blister, I didn't know what it was. He had it about three weeks, it wasn't growing and didn't seem to bother him. It didn't look gross or anything, almost like a mole, but more red than brown. Then one Sunday he accidently scratched it and it bled profusely. So we were thinking then if it WAS a blood blister, it should deflate. Well, it didn't and instead it was still there but now just kind of hanging off his cheek and oozing. It was horrible to look at, so we put a band-aid on it. Thankfully his Dr's appointment for his check-up was just a few days away. The Dr. looked at it and knew right away what it was..something like a Pytocular Granuloma blah blah blah. Something about it had probably been scratched, and the blood vessels came to the out side of the skin. It would NOT have went away on it's own, it would have to be cut off. Ugh. So we went to a Pediatric Dermatologist (yep, they have those, who knew!!!) the next day. They put a big needle in it and did some laser stuff and it was gone. So now a few weeks later ,he has a small scar that will probably continue to subside, but other than that...all gone.

Much to the boy's excitement, Halloween finally arrived. Chandler was a gladiator, Cooper was a king knight and Max was a caveman. MUCH against my better judgement, both Chandler and Cooper insisted they needed shields and swords for their costumes. I KNEW it would be a waste, they would end up in the stroller before the night was over. BUT Halloween only comes once a year, you are only a kid once, and I knew they would probably get some use out of them during regular play, so I went ahead and we got all of the accessories. The boys did look awesome. And YES, all of these "must-have" things were in the bottom of the stroller by block two. Ugh!! Max, once again, refused to participate in the Halloween festivities, and would not wear his costume. I had made it, bought some fabric, got him a bone necklace, and bracelets, he would have been so cute!! I could not even keep it on him long enough to get a picture. He was tired and fell asleep in the stroller by block two. They got lots of candy and had a blast.

And, that in a nutshell, was our October.
Pictures to come soon, that is also on my to-do list, download pics from the camera.
